Or maybe I’m not seeing something I should:

A Scottish company has just clinched a series of deals to sell sushi to Japan.

The contracts for sashimi style mumbai and piccante flavoured salmon are expected to add £500,000 in sales to Gourmet’s Choice.

The

Japanese business will see the Banffshire-based company supply 44

tonnes of smoked salmon specifically for Japan’s two gift market

seasons.

Its products will also be used on flights run by Japan

Airlines and its subsidiary Jalux. Gourmet’s Choice has also won a

contract to supply a number of expatriate outlets.

The contracts

are a further boost for the business after it made major inroads into

export markets in 2004. Overseas sales have more than doubled in the

last 12 months with a 40% increase in sales up to Christmas alone,

compared to the previous year. The firm’s turnover currently stands at

£3 million, up almost a third on last year. It currently employs 35

people.

Terry Curran, the company’s sales director, said: “The

European market has really opened up this year, and with the Japan

deals we are now beginning to take our business in a new direction.

“Smoked

salmon is flying out the door – we’re already sending seven to eight

tonnes of it overseas per week, six tonnes of that in Europe.”

So um, what’s next — haggis-style sushi?
