Cool Canadian Crime

This was actually reported late last week but I only saw this now:

Canadian author Louise Penny’s debut crime novel STILL LIFE, featuring Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec, who’s certain there’s something sinister lurking behind his village’s squeaky-clean exterior, to St. Martin’s, by Patty Moosbrugger (US). UK/Commonwealth rights to Sherise Hobbs at Headline, by Teresa Chris. German rights to Goldmann and Dutch rights by Unieboek.

Penny, who has worked for the CBC for many years, was thisclose to winning last year’s Debut Dagger competition, but she manages to get a publishing deal ahead of the winner, Ellen Grubb. I’m looking forward to this because I suspect Penny’s portrayal of the SQ will be a far cry from the kind of antics they’ve often displayed in bigger cities.

Look for STILL LIFE to be in UK bookstores this October.
