So you want to write pulp fiction

For those that do, you can read my little spiel about the state of small presses and short story markets over at MB Toolbox, the blog for freelancers run by Claire Zulkey.

The piece was sparked, of course, by Stephen King’s upcoming novel for Hard Case Crime. Is this a sign of pulp getting its due once again? That remains to be seen, but I’m certainly optimistic. (It’s also interesting to see how literary types like Neal Pollack are embracing pulp fiction with a near evangelical fervor of late.) I do hope that the scope can be broadened even more — but then again, maybe I just want to figure out how I can write my Orthodox Jewish pulp fiction tale…
